MCC to hold job fair Aug. 17
The Morris County Collaborative will host a job fair from 9:30-11:30 a.m. at the MCC Building at 200 Jefferson Street in Daingerfield. Organizer Tolita Teddleton said the job fair is looking for companies and employers to participate. “ We expect that the Job Fair will be a success and will greatly benefit the companies as well as prospective employees”, Teddleton said. “ We invite all employers to participate and kindly request that you contact us to confirm your attendance.” Prospective businesses are asked to contact MCC at (430) 226-9100 or fill out the form on MCC’s website, www.morriscountycollab.com.
Church on the Rock offers food drive each Wednesday
, “All imperfect people are welcome, be our guest.” Church on the Rock members held their monthly food bank, Wednesday, August 2nd. This is their third month of doing these food drives for their community, and they plan to continue the fellowship. In their first month, they served about 350 families; in their second month, they served about 370 families. Church on the Rock plans to hold their food drives on the first Wednesday of the month. Fellowship and serving their community is what they are all about.
Local football teams hit the gridiron for first scrimmages this weekend
As school begins across the area, so too does football season as local teams hit the gridiron for their first scrimmages of the year. Coach Davin Nelson’s Daingerfield Tigers will hit the road to scrimmage at Grand Saline Thursday. Joining the Tigers and Indians will be Clarksville. Coach Cedrick Dorsey’s Pewitt Brahmas will open their scrimmage slate at home, taking on Harmony at Brahma Stadium at 9:30 a.m. Saturday. Coach Joshua Willis’ Hughes Springs Mustangs will hold their first scrimmage at Mustang Stadium Friday as they meet New Boston. The 2023 season opens Aug. 24-26.

Texas A&M Forest Service encourages caution as wildfire danger increases statewide
COLLEGE STATION, Texas — As persistent triple-digit temperatures and dry conditions increase wildfire danger for much of the state, Texas A&M Forest Service urges Texans to be cautious with outdoor activities that create sparks. HSISD approves handbooks, student code of conduct, vaping punishment at special meeting
While it was a short special meeting, the Hughes Springs ISD Board of Trustees approved this coming year’s handbooks and a state-mandated punishment for vaping offenses during a special meeting held July 24. During the meeting, the board approved the 202324 Student Handbook and Athletic Handbook. HSISD Superintendent Sarah Dildine said the Student Handbook needed only a few slight clarifications on a few items. “ There was very little in the way of change, but we clarified a few items – hats, drug testing, vaping, etc.,” she said. Daingerfield alum and NFL wide receiver Denzel Mims will have the chance to run with a new pride this NFL season. Mims, entering his third season in the NFL was traded last Wednesday night as the New York Jets sent Mims and a 2025 seventh-round pick to the Detroit Lions for a 2025 conditional sixth-round pick. Avinger man sentenced to 24 years in federal prison
An Avinger man was sentenced to more than 24 years in federal prison for drug trafficking violations, U.S. Attorney Damien M. Diggs announced July 18. Joshua Adam Tolar, 41, pleaded guilty on Jan. 26, 2023, to conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute and distribution of methamphetamine and was sentenced to 292 months in federal prison by Chief U.S. District Judge J. Rodney Gilstrap on July 17, 2023. According to information presented in court, Tolar was part of a drug trafficking organization responsible for distributing large quantities of methamphetamine in the Marshall area.
