Morris County added to Governor Abbott’s recent disaster declaration
, Governor Greg Abbott added Morris County to the recent disaster declaration issued in response to last week’s storms. Morris and Shelby counties were added to the declaration Wednesday afternoon, approximately two days after an amendment added Camp and Titus counties to the declaration. The governor’s declaration, originally issued June 16, now includes Montgomery, Leon, Ochiltree, Cass, Franklin, Harrison, Marion, Upshur, Wood, Camp, Gregg, Hopkins, Panola, Smith, Titus, Morris and Shelby counties. “Following more information gathered from communities affected by last week’s severe weather in Northeast Texas, I added Morris and Shelby counties to our state’s disaster declaration,” said Governor Abbott. “Expanding...

Daingerfield Juneteenth
, On June 17th, the 3rd annual Juneteenth Celebration was held in Daingerfield. This year’s event was organized by the Morris County Collaborative. The celebration began with a parade featuring the crowned Miss and Junior Miss Juneteenth. After the parade, attendees moved to Daingerfield State Park to continue the festivities. They enjoyed delicious food, learned about the history of Juneteenth, sang songs, and were treated to a performance by the Daingerfield High School Cheerleaders. The Biz Kids were also present, selling snow cones, lemonade, and artwork. Despite the scorching heat, everyone was happy and enjoyed each other’s company, making the most of the event.
HSISD Board approves new weight room and athletic facility
The Hughes Springs Mustangs will soon have new athletic facilities, thanks to a vote by the Hughes Springs ISD Board of Trustees on June 12. During the action item portion of their agenda, the board reviewed educational specifications for both an Athletic Performance Facility and an Athletic Field House. Both were approved unanimously by the trustees in attendance. The fieldhouse will primarily accommodate dressing rooms for ninth through twelfth grade boys, but could possibly include sixth through eighth grade boys and ninth through twelfth grade girls, if space allows. Oglesby named general manager
Miranda Oglesby has been named the general manager for the Mount Pleasant Tribune, The Pittsburg Gazette and The Daingerfield Steel-Country Bee. Oglesby joined the Mount Pleasant Tribune as a reporter and page designer in 2018, later becoming the paper’s managing editor in 2019. An award-winning journalist, she has bylines in publications throughout Texas, and her background includes experience at Sulphur Springs News-Telegram, Longview News-Journal and, most recently, The Paris News. Oglesby lives in Mount Pleasant with her husband and two children.

The Steel County Bee recently named a new editor. Sports editor Quinten Boyd was recently named editor at the Bee, replacing former editor Toni Walker, who is pursuing new opportunities. Escaped Morris County inmate back in custody
AMorris County inmate who escaped custody while on work detail is back in custody after being on the run for nearly two days. According to Morris County Sheriff Jack Martin, Holloway went missing while working as a trustee outside of the jail complex on Friday, June 9.
