Daingerfield Bee
What’s that Sound?
, Ever walked by a tree or bush and heard a roar like a freight train? No? Then you are in for a treat! Head to a large oak or holly tree in bloom this time of year, and you will hear – and probably see – thousands of honeybees and other pollinators gathering nectar and/or pollen from the blossoms. Their collective buzz really can be quite unnerving, until you recognize that this as a work of God in your garden. Here is a photo of a blooming American holly in our landscape. How many honeybees and other pollinators can...

The Morris County city council approved the hiring of contractor JSG Homes LLC for the Daingerfield home program. The contractor is based out of Atlanta, TX and has already built several homes for the Morris County home program. They have also built homes in Hughes Springs, Pittsburg, and Cass County. A representative for KBB Consulting, Kathy Boils, was present at the meeting and said, “ The TDHCA, the Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs, funds the program. They have a maximum of about $135 per square foot they can spend per house.” Also approved was the act to elect judges to set...

Springtime Visitors
, Aren’t you glad God created springtime? Friends in Wisconsin wrote recently that they just received 4 more inches of snow. Friends in Nigeria reported more days of seasonal dust storms. Friends in New Zealand said that they are considering moving to NZ’s South Island, where 4 in 10 days are cool and overcast. We are grateful for Northeast Texas’ short winters, long summers, and too-short spring and falls. We finished pruning last week, so orchards, berries, fruit vines, roses, and flowering perennials look great. Light green leaves pop everywhere, and the landscape changes every day. Mexican wild plum has bloomed,...
Good. Better. Best. Phenomenal. Sensational.
, , Those adjectives generally describe the quality of paper towels, ballpoint pens, and 4th grade science projects. The same words also point to a current debate amongst gardeners: Which lavender plant variety is best? Lavender is such an inconsequential thing. Yes, it is a beautiful, useful, fragrant, and colorful plant, and it does attract pollinators, but it is, frankly, just a plant. Why should you care? You have many things to think about and to investigate. Wars are raging, politicians are shouting, friends are suffering, and family members are dying. There are serious issues right here and right now, and...
Friendships Shine Bright in Stories
Once upon a sunny morning, not so far back, in the land of letters and storytelling, in my writing office at home, a peculiar idea sprouted in the corner of my mind. It was a tale that needed to be told, filled with clucking laughter, brimming with joy, and interwoven with the golden threads of friendship. It’s the children’s story of ‘Cranky the Camel and Barnyard’s Got Talent.’ Creating a children’s book is not unlike planting a garden. Each character is a seed that, when nurtured with love and care, grows into a story that can shade, shelter, and feed the...

When I can’t breathe!
In the heart of East Texas where I live, where the pine trees whisper secrets about what could have been and the sun casts a golden hue, I encountered a homeless man whose untold story of loss tugged at my heart. His eyes reflected a deepness of sorrow and loss as he shared with me in a moment of vulnerability, “I can’t breathe today; I stopped living when he died.” Curious and concerned, I pressed gently, seeking to understand the source of his pain. “ When who died?” I asked, stepping closer, a silent gesture of my willingness to share his...
Daingerfield Chamber holds awards banquet
, , , , , , , , , , Tractor Supply: Manager, JR Ingle and his team have had a big impact on the Tri-City area. A few of the ways they have supported the community are donations to the 4H and the FFA and supplied raffle items to several different organizations. They also were responsible for getting the Christmas trees in the Daingerfield City Park this year and they donated a big portion of them to the event. His team has also helped with the Animal shelter and the Daingerfield State Parks fish habitat. Recently they won an...
A walking stick for leaning
Nick (not his real name) avoided me, for the most part, except to intimidate me by spewing ugly words. And even though he offered horrible phrases, I’ve longed he might trust in Christ. I recently stopped at the parking lot where a church group served lunch to the homeless, and I saw Nick sitting on the curb eating from a styrofoam plate. And I made my way near after getting out of the car. He spoke, “Hi Pam,” a short greeting, like a soothing balm to my heart. I sat down a few feet away, unsure if my old lady self was stuck...

Tiger hoops finishes season with bi-district championship
The Daingerfield Tigers came tantalizingly close to sharing a district championship, but could not secure the win over Sabine at home in their second meeting and fell in their district finale at New Diana. The Tigers looked to shake that off in favor of a deep playoff run, kicking off their run against Troup at Pine Tree’s Pirate Center. The blue and white Tigers of Morris County jumped out to a five-point lead after the first quarter and extended it to 10 at halftime against the maroon and white Tigers of Cherokee and Smith counties. Daingerfield finished the game on a 30-20 run to claim the bi-district championship, 62-42. Daingerfield moved on to the area round where they met the fifth-ranked Hooks Hornets at Mount Pleasant’s Willie Williams Gymnasium. Unfortunately, Hooks would be the blue and white team taking advantage of scoring runs, starting the game on a 20-6 run and taking a 21-point lead into the half. Daingerfield battled in the second half, but Hooks’ run was too large as the Hornets won over the Tigers, 83-48. The Tigers finished their season at 9-9 overall and 7-3 in district play. Daingerfield graduates seniors Tristan Smith and Skylar Smith.

Overtime Matters
As I reflect on the thrilling spectacle of the Super Bowl, particularly its climactic last five minutes and the heart-stopping overtime, I can’t help but draw parallels to the journey of faith and perseverance in our walk with God. The Super Bowl encapsulates many life lessons with its blend of strategy, talent, and sheer willpower. Yet, in those final, decisive moments, we often witness the true spirit of resilience, which speaks volumes to us as believers. Imagine the scene: two teams, each battling through sweat and determination, reach the culmination of a game and an entire season’s effort. The scoreboard teeters...
Tigers fall against Cardinals in home finale; sit in second place in district
Friday, the Daingerfield Tigers had a chance to pull into a tie for first place in District 15-3A. The team needed a win over Sabine to split the season series and possibly share a district title with just one game remaining after Friday. Unfortunately, the Tigers couldn’t maintain their fast start, falling in their home finale against the Cardinals, 68-51. Sabine outscored Daingerfield in the third quarter, 20-7 to take control of the game. The Tigers tried to come back in the fourth quarter, but the Cardinals’ defense allowed Sabine to maintain their lead even through a cold spell in the fourth. Chase Johnson led Daingerfield with 18 points. Kenny Mosley added 16 points. Cameron Wilson and Brayden Williams each finished with seven and Skylar Smith put in two. Hudson McNatt led Sabine with 23 points. Colt Sparks finished with 18 and Dalton Taylor put in 12. The Tigers are currently second in district and finished their regular season Tuesday on the road at New Diana. Daingerfield will likely take on Troup in the bi-district round of the playoffs next week.
Suitcase of Love
The patrol car drove up and parked, and the officer stepped toward me, where I stood with my homeless friends. “ Who’s Pam?” My homeless friends asked me, ‘ What have you done?” I stood there, unsure what was unfolding, and answered the officer. “I’m Pam. I don’t have any warrants, do I?” He laughed but then got serious. “A young woman was beaten by her boyfriend, and she’s pregnant. And now she’s walking a few blocks away,” he pointed. “She is staying at the women’s battered shelter nearby. Will you talk with her and maybe help her find a church group...

DLSISD board hears construction updates, approves yearly audit
Prior to conducting business, the Daingerfield-Lone Star ISD school board took time out to recognize another set of champions, this one from West and South elementaries and Daingerfield Junior High. The board honored the campuses’ UIL competitors prior to the start of the Jan. 22 meeting, then the board itself was recognized for National School Board month. “ We appreciate the opportunity to serve this community,” said board president Neil Roney. “ We are excited about our school and our students.” The board heard from Tim Holt and Scott Murray of Thomas and Thomas CPA, who presented the district’s audit. The district received...
