The reason behind Klay Thompson turning down the Los Angeles Lakers in favor of the Dallas Mavericks has been revealed.

According to Lakers insider Anthony F. Irwin, Thompson declined the offer because the Lakers wouldn't guarantee him a starting spot on their roster.

"Lakers didn't want to promise a starting gig to Klay Thompson," Irwin posted on X.

Despite not offering him a starting spot, the Lakers still pursued him, offering $20 million per year according to Bleacher Report's Chris Haynes .

However, Thompson ultimately chose to join the Dallas Mavericks due to the guaranteed starting role, even though he took less money with a three-year, $50 million contract.

Klay Thompson is set to start as the Mavericks' small forward in the upcoming NBA season, as confirmed by Shams Charania of The Athletic on The Pat McAfee Show.

With assurances of being a "guaranteed starter" and receiving consistent playing time in Dallas, Thompson's move marks a pivotal transition after a distinguished 13-year tenure with the Golden State Warriors, where he earned four NBA championships.

Joining forces with Kyrie Irving and Luka Doncic, Thompson forms a potent trio for the Mavericks, aiming to secure a return trip to the NBA Finals after falling short against the Boston Celtics in five games last season.

As Thompson embarks on this new journey with the Mavericks, he eyes another championship opportunity, adding to his illustrious career achievements.

Thompson's addition brings veteran leadership and skill to the Mavericks' lineup, setting the stage for an intriguing upcoming season as they navigate through a competitive Western Conference, which includes his former team, the Golden State Warriors.
