Dak Prescott sends message that Cowboys' front office should take as a warning

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said on the team's opening press conference out of training camp that he expects quarterback Dak Prescott to stay on the team beyond the 2024 NFL season.

However, Prescott understands the game he loves most is also a business and he's certainly not backing down when it comes to his ongoing contract negotiations with the Cowboys, telling the media that "(Dallas) is where I have become a man but at the end of the day it's a business."

Not only that, but Prescott sent a very telling message that the Cowboys front office should be taking as a straight-up warning: He's not afraid to bet on himself and use the leverage he has, and most importantly, he will not play lickspittle for a front office that has taken him to contract years twice now, without counting the 2020 season, when Dak played under the franchise tag.

"You know, I'm going to say it, I want to be here but when you look up, all the great quarterbacks I've watched, they've played for other teams," Prescott candidly told reporters on Thursday via NFL Network's Jane Slater. "So my point in saying that is that that's not something to fear.

"That might be a reality for me one day," he added. "It may not be my decision."

Prescott's words shouldn't be taken lightly by Cowboys Nation: The second-team All-Pro quarterback has mostly addressed the conversation around his contract status by stiff-arming drama out of the way, using lines such as "the money will take care of itself," and "I let my agent handle that." It's not the first time that Dak has opened up about potentially not being in Dallas in 2025.

This is a clear stance from Dak, showing that the mere fear of missing out on being a Cowboy won't sway his decision one way or the other. He's got four aces in his hand and he knows it.

The question is if the Joneses will embrace the fact and pay up.

"Believe it or not in my life I've had a lot of things I wanted that I couldn't get because I couldn't afford it," Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said hours before Prescott got to the podium himself.

    Now we wait.
