Dallas Cowboys Urged To Trade For Intriguing Young RB

The Dallas Cowboys are a team that people are keeping a close eye on throughout training camp. There are massive storylines to follow, headlined by the contract negotiations with quarterback Dak Prescott and wide receiver CeeDee Lamb.

Prescott has reported to camp and is practicing with his teammates, but Lamb is a holdout. He has not reported and it sounds as if he won’t show up until an extension is worked out.

That is bad news for the Cowboys, as rumors have swirled that Lamb could seek a trade if they are unwilling to pay him the kind of contract he is seeking. Reportedly, he wants a deal similar to what Justin Jefferson agreed to with the Minnesota Vikings making him the highest-paid non-quarterback in the NFL.

Things are going to get very expensive in Dallas. A long-term extension for star edge rusher Micah Parsons is on deck next offseason as well.

Knowing how much it will cost to retain three of their most important players long-term could explain the approach that was taken with the backfield. Running back Tony Pollard departed in free agency, signing with the Tennessee Titans and nothing was really done to replace him.

The Cowboys opted to bring back Ezekiel Elliott after a one-season hiatus spent with the New England Patriots. He certainly isn’t the answer as a lead back, but is the most experienced option the team currently has.

Behind him on the depth chart are Duece Vaughn, Royce Freeman, Rico Dowdle and Malik Davis. Counting on someone from that group along with Elliott to carry the backfield would be a disaster waiting to happen.

Given how much Prescott relies on the running game to play off of, Dallas should be aggressively seeking upgrades for their backfield. Alex Ballentine of Bleacher Report could have the solution.

He has suggested that the Cowboys make a trade with the Houston Texans for Dameon Pierce. His proposal has Dallas sending a 2025 sixth-round pick to the Texans to get the deal done.

“Trading for Dameon Pierce could be one such move. The 2022 fourth-round pick averaged 4.3 yards per carry and posted 1,104 yards from scrimmage as a rookie before losing the backfield to Devin Singletary last season.

The Texans don’t seem to have Pierce in the plans after trading for Joe Mixon, signing Cam Akers and drafting Jawhar Jordan in the sixth round. The Cowboys could make a low-risk move by giving up a Day 3 pick to give him a shot at winning a role in camp,” Ballentine wrote.

Pierce would instantly become the lead back in Dallas for early down work. Houston’s depth chart has enough talent that flipping him for a late-round pick to add a player elsewhere would make sense.
