    Local American Legion’s checks stolen & washed, York County man charged

    YORK COUNTY, Pa. (WHTM) — A man was accused Monday of stealing checks from an American Legion to alter them and deposit them into bank accounts, police said.

    York County Regional Police said in a criminal complaint that Gianni Olivo, 21, of York, allegedly stole two checks that belonged to the Dallastown American Legion and a check from a resident.

    After the checks were dropped off at the Dallastown Post Office, police said they were stolen by Olivo.

    The amounts on the two checks from the Dallastown American Legion were altered to be $6,000 and $4,378.11, while the one from the resident was altered to the amount of $4,898.11, police said.

    The checks were then taken and deposited into Capital One and Member’s 1st accounts. One of the credit unions gave police images of Olivo at an ATM and a car that police traced to find where he lived.

    When his apartment was searched on July 9, police said they found stolen checks and mail from the legion, check washing material, check printing papers, multiple bank cards with different names on them, including one that had the name of a person’s account that a check was deposited under, and cell phones. Also found was a stolen check under the name of the resident who reported there’s was stolen out of an outdoor mail bin.

    In an interview, Olivo allegedly admitted to stealing mail out of outdoor mail bins in York and Harrisburg and depositing altered checks, police said.

    Olivo faces felony charges of forgery, identity theft, and theft by unlawful taking, as well as a misdemeanor charge of theft of mail.

    A summons was issued for Olivo who has a preliminary hearing scheduled on July 30.
