Officer John Davis sworn into Dalton Police Department

DALTON — Mayor Aaron Holzman swore in police officer John Davis to the Dalton Police Department to kick off February’s Council meeting.

In her secretary report, Laura Kinney announced that a backflow was completed on the water system by Lameo & Associates. Also, she said that the/ quarterly payment of $5,833.52 was received for the fourth quarter of 2023.

In the law and legislative report, Council voted to execute and file an application with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Commonwealth Financing Authority for a local share grant to secure funding for the Dalton Fire Company to acquire a brush truck to be equipped with emergency lighting and equipment in an amount not to exceed $225,000 (amended to reflect an adjustment in a new amount of $295,000).

In his grants report, Councilman Brian Malamud reminded Council that the grants committee was awarded $125,000 for the Greenways Trails and Recreation Program through DCED (Department of Community and Economic Development). He said that the original application was for $250,000 with a 15% match. He mentioned that the match went down to $18,250 and would like to turn the award of $125,000 into a one-for-one match. He said that he can apply for an additional $125,000, which absorbs the 15% match on the original $125,000.

Also, the grants committee applied for $210,000 for the Watershed Restoration Protection Program.

“Since both came from DCED, it was kind of predicted that we would get one or the other,” he said.

Malamud said that he would like resubmit the application in March.

In her public relations report, Councilwoman Heather Burke announced future events such as the Dalton Dash, a spring cleanup, and the farm to family festival. She said that the Dalton Community & Commerce Association (DCCA) plans to merge the trunk or treat with the Halloween party in October. She also said that the committee has to evaluate the safety and liability of using Stereamside Park for the annual fishing derby in May.

In his mayor’s report, Holzman said that he discussed with the Dalton Fire Company about a possible contract with the borough of Waverly. He mentioned that Dalton will continue to actively seek reimbursement with Waverly in terms of workers’ compensation.

“What the fire company decides to do with the contract, that’s obviously up to the fire company, ” he said.

Also, Holzman discussed the proposal of Comcast from the Philadelphia firm Cohen Law Group. He said that the finance committee looked at it and found out that Council used the firm 10 years ago to obtain a contract with Comcast.

“The finance committee’s recommendations on that are signed with the other municipalities that are going on with it,” he said.

Council voted to sign with Cohen Law Group.

In his police report, Chief Chris Tolson announced that School Resources Officer (SRO) Carrielle Collins received an award from the National Association of School Resources Offices (NASRO). Also, he mentioned that patrol officer Richard Stevens received the Pennsylvania DUI Association Award.
