DAYTON, Ohio ( WDTN ) — The 14th annual Dragons 5k took place Saturday morning in the heart of the Water Street District.

This year, over 2300 participants came out, with 100 virtual contestants running along with them. It was a record year for the organization, making it one of the largest races in the Miami Valley.

Cincinnati could be the new home of Sundance Film Festival

“It’s a community event. We want to make sure we can get Dragons fans and other people from Dayton area together,” said Jacob Arthur, Dragons manager of corporate partnerships.

2 NEWS reporter Grace Hewitt and Living Dayton host Caroline Morse emceed the event and even got to participate in some of the pre-race action.

And while the heat backed off, safety was still a big factor for all involved. The Dragons ensured medical personnel were available throughout the event, as well as offered numerous water filling stations.

“As far as race days go, you can’t ask for any better weather, but it is important to stay hydrated and we have a hydration point at the halfway point,” said Arthur. “We have fruit and water after the race. There’s also a city of Dayton water truck here on the plaza.”

This year, the Dragons had group prizes and a race for the plate, creating some friendly competition between high school groups.

But whether you’re an experienced runner or a first timer, one thing is for sure — it was a great experience for all.

“For fun, pure fun with some friends,” said Olivia Kelsey, a first time participant. “Our goal is to cross the finish line and not be injured.”

“It was great, it was an awesome July day to come out here and run with a bunch of friends,” said Jack Randall, the first finisher. “I had a group come up from Cincinnati. It’s all about having fun and I’m ready to enjoy the day after this.”
