‘There’s people screaming;’ 911 calls detail moments driver hits 2 people at hospital

Witnesses detail the moments a car hit two men at a local hospital on Monday.

As reported on News Center 7 at 6:00 , several 911 calls were made as the scene unfolded in front of Miami Valley Hospital North around 3:45 p.m.

“Hey, something’s going on at Miami Valley Hospital North in the parking lot. There’s people screaming. They’ve got their phones out trying to tape something. I don’t know,” a 911 caller said.

Hospital staff, campus police, and people driving by the hospital on Main Street called for help.

“I’m up on the fourth floor calling from the doctor’s office,” another caller said.

“Hey, we need your guys’ assistance over here at (the) North campus. I’ve just had a vehicle go flying through our Main Street lot. And I’m getting reports of multiple people being struck… And I’ve got a person on camera down now,” a hospital police officer said.

Witnesses described the chaotic scene to dispatchers.

“We need the police up here at Good Samaritan (sic) North right now. There’s a guy in a Cadillac driving through the parking lot, hitting parked cars, running over people,” one of the callers said.

Montgomery County Sheriff’s deputies said they think the 60-year-old man behind the wheel was impaired. It is not clear what substance may have been in his system.

Deputies said the man was backing a Cadillac into a parking spot when he went onto the sidewalk, through a mulch bed, and collided with a guard shack.

He then hit William Rodenberg, 77, and a 74-year-old man outside the main entrance.

Still in reverse, the driver hit a Kia, which then crashed into the back of a Montgomery County bus.

The 60-year-old put the car into drive and dragged the two men a short distance before hitting a pole and a third car in the lot.

“The guy ran through the landscaping and hit poles and it almost landed on a couple people,” a caller said.

“Somebody got hit at the main gate — at the main door. Campus police is here now talking to the guy, but we need — he’s still trying to drive,” another caller told dispatchers.

Rodenberg was transported to Miami Valley Hospital and died from his injuries. The 74-year-old man sustained life-threatening injuries.

The crash scene was so complex, that Englewood police asked the Sheriff’s Office for help.

News Center 7 is working to learn the identity of the driver.
