DAYTON — The mother of a 7-year-old boy who was shot and killed last month was recently indicted by the Rhea County Grand Jury for her alleged role in the immediate aftermath of the shooting.

According to court records, Lakisha Shannay Jones is facing charges of tampering with evidence and filing a false report.

The indictments state that on Jan. 14, the day of the alleged shooting, Lakisha Jones made a false statement to Rhea County Sheriff’s Department Investigators “with the intent to hinder the officer from apprehending or locating Chris’tion Jones,” the suspect who was later arrested and charged with criminal homicide in the shooting death of the 7-year-old.

Lakisha Jones was also charged with tampering with evidence for allegedly “conceal[ing] firearms with the intent to impair said firearms availability as evidence in the investigation into the homicide […].”

Chris'tion Hamilton Jones was arrested on Jan. 19 on a single felony county of criminal homicide, Rhea County Sheriff’s Department Chief Deputy John Argo said, and is currently incarcerated at the Rhea County Jail, awaiting an initial court date.

A Rhea County 7-year-old boy died on Monday, Jan. 15, after sustaining a gunshot wound on Sunday, Jan. 14, according to local law enforcement officials.

Officials said that the incident happened at around 5 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 14.

According to Rhea County central dispatch, at around that time, a 911 call was placed regarding a gun discharged at a home in the area of Upper Fine Lane in Dayton.

According to reports, law enforcement officials said that the family took the boy to Rhea Medical Center, where he was administered to. However, the boy was then taken to Erlanger Children’s Hospital in Chattanooga, where he passed away on Monday, Jan. 15, according to reports.
