FREDERICK, Md. ( DC News Now ) — After months of constant work, Frederick mother of three, Brooke Desantis was able to make her goal of spreading awareness about sepsis a reality after the bill was signed into law by Maryland Governor Wes Moore.

“One of the biggest issues with medicine is the fear of raising a concern and advocating for a loved one, even if it doesn’t pertain to substance,” Desantis said. “This helps to eliminate a good portion of that.”

Desantis lost her 5-year-old son Lochlin after battling with sepsis and from that time on she has dedicated her life to spreading awareness about the sickness.

“Locklin’s law reflects the protocols and education policies for the state of Maryland and regards to sepsis and the prevention,” Desantis explained.

Now with the law being passed, hospitals, urgent cares, and any other medical facility will be required to develop protocols and training to better identify sepsis.

“It was a long day of waiting but it was worth it when you heard your number called because then you go upstairs and you get to see something enacted that hasn’t been before,” Desantis said.

Desantis says although she is happy the law was passed in Maryland, her mission to expand awareness is far from over.

“Locklin’s death has meaning now, that’s that’s what it feels like,” Desantis said. “But also meaning for all of those who may have lost a loved one too so we’re not just fighting for us, we’re fighting for everyone and that’s why we plan to take it to a federal level.”

Lochlin’s Law is set to be enacted by October first.
