    Gas leak breaks out after car collides with library in Montgomery County

    MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Md. ( DC News Now ) — A car collided with the side of the Davis Library in Montgomery County on Tuesday, causing a gas leak.

    Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service (MCFRS) crews responded to the library just after 3 p.m. in the 6400 block of Democracy Blvd. Pete Pirigner, a spokesman for the department, said a vehicle struck the library and hit a gas meter, causing a leak.

    The library and nearby daycare were evacuated and no one was hurt.

    Crews cordoned the area off and the gas company was on the scene as of 4:09 p.m. Washington Gas officials shut off the high-pressure gas line to the damaged gas meter to ensure the leak was under control.

    Piringer noted that the temperature at the scene was 100 degrees at the time of the crash and subsequent evacuation. MCFRS brought in air-conditioned buses to shelter those who had to evacuate.

    Bells Mill Road in the area of Davis Library was closed as of 4:30 p.m.
