Wawa makes entrance in convenience store market in West Virginia

INWOOD, W.Va. ( DC News Now ) — Brace yourself West Virginia for the convenience store wars to come.

Long dominated by Sheetz, Royal Farms, The ROCCS chain and 7-Eleven, Pennsylvania-based Wawa markets broke ground Wednesday on its first West Virginia location.

Family-owned Wawa already has more than 1,000 convenience stores in eight states and finds the Mountain State welcoming of its new venture

“It’s hard to find somewhere in this part of the state that is growing as fast as Berkeley and Jefferson counties,” John Poplawski, vice president for Wawa Inc., said. “The proximity to I-81 really made this a great choice for us.”

The new Wawa property is off the traffic rotary at Route 11 and 51 in Inwood.
