BLACKSBURG, Va. (WRIC) — Virginia Tech is now offering a specific on-campus housing option for students in recovery from substance abuse disorders.

According to a release by Jimmy Robertson, students at Virginia Tech that are in recovery can live in The Roost — a living-learning community located within Payne Hall. This housing option is overseen by a Virginia Tech Recovery Community staff member and encourages the inclusion of students with similar interests.

The Roost contains 14 beds that sit on the same hallway as the Recovery Lounge, where Virginia Tech Recovery Community staff offices are located. Students will have access to staff members, a kitchen and a space for gatherings.

On Friday, Sept. 6 at noon, an official ribbon-cutting ceremony for The Roost will take place. This is just one of many planned events during National Recovery Month, held throughout September.

According to Kaitlin Carter — assistant director in the Virginia Tech Recovery Community — five students are living in The Roost this semester. The remaining beds will house students that have been vetted as safe and supportive of the recovery community.

To live in The Roost, students in recovery must complete an application process through the Office of Living-Learning Programs, which consists of answering a prompt and meeting face to face with a coordinator to determine fit.

This is not the only campus in Virginia that has made the move to help students in recovery — the University of Richmond has substance-free housing and the University of Virginia has recovery housing available.
