WASHINGTON ( DC News Now ) — As students and teachers return to the classroom, back-to-school sales prolong, as discount offers emerge.

The sheer cost of back-to-school supplies can be dizzying, and items now on clearance can help consumers save on supplies still needed for this school year and even get ahead of the curve for next year.

According to the Natio nal Retail Federation, households are expected to spend $875 on school supplies, a large increase from the $670 spent 10 years ago .

Among current clearance offers, Target includes a 12-cent folder , an 8-pack of pencils for 33 cents, and a colorful notebook.

Shelves will soon be cleared to make room for fall purchases, especially for in-store Halloween costumes and decorations.

When building wardrobes, thrifting and social media pages can lead to savings, too.

“I noticed in a lot of the ‘buy nothing groups’, people will give hand-me-downs, especially for the younger kids if they’re considered play clothes,” said Lauren Gajadeera, a Montgomery County mom of two on savings strategies.

Whether browsing in-store or online, consumers can consider signing up for store loyalty programs. Even if consumers don’t wish to pay a fee for some programs, they can consider free trial offers to access limited-time perks.
