STAFFORD COUNTY, Va. ( DC News Now ) — First responders were at the scene of a fire at a family’s home that displaced multiple people on Thursday afternoon in Stafford County.

Just before 2:40 p.m., Stafford County Fire and Rescue (SCFR) responded to the home in the 800 block of Walnut Drive. At the scene, crews reported seeing flames engulfing the residence.

They were able to control the fire in about 30 minutes, but were challenged by the steep terrain and long distances to fire hydrants, SCFR stated in a post on Facebook.

No one was home at the time, but an adult and four children were displaced.

Four dogs survived the fire, but two cats are still missing as of Thursday evening.

One firefighter was evaluated for injuries at the scene, but declined further treatment.

Fredericksburg Fire Department officials and the Fauquier County Fire and Rescue System helped SCFR in their response. The Stafford County Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating further.
