Both men charged in brutal Portage-area slaying are headed to trial
VALPARAISO — It appears both men charged in a brutal slaying last summer at a public fishing area near Portage are taking their murder cases to trial. An Aug. 5 trial date has been affirmed for Domonic Brothers, 28, of Gary, and Jada Monroe, 29, of Virginia, is scheduled to face jurors Oct. 1, records show.

Art Barn School of Art to host Art Blitz
The Art Barn School of Art will again host the Art Blitz in which people will have the chance to get creative. The Art Barn will host its 8th Annual Art Blitz from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 21. The art festival will include art-making, art demonstrations, hands-on art activities and the “Butterflies & Beyond." The invitational exhibit aims to raise awareness of native plants and pollinators and features the work of regional artists whose work focuses on nature themes.
Massasauga to play Hobart Art Theater
Massasauga, the sibling rock band, will perform in Valparaiso Sunday. The band will perform at 7 p.m. Friday at the Hobart Art Theater at 230 Main St. The concert will support the singer and guitarist's Eagle Scout project to build a new canoe and kayak launch at the East Branch of the Little Calumet River Water Trail.
No parking and lane restrictions to take place on Portage Avenue in Portage
The City of Portage announced no parking and lane restrictions that will take place on Portage Avenue July 30-31. A contractor will be working along Portage Avenue milling and paving. They will be removing the intersection of Portage Avenue and Hamstrom Road, the Crisman Road approach, the Jackson Street approach, the parking lane from west of Pennsylvania Street to east of Jackson Street and the westbound lane between approximately 6444 and 6517 Portage Avenue.

Just days into his training at a Des Moines trucking firm, an Illinois man claims he was dismissed for refusing to cut his dreadlocks. City of Crown Point celebrates family, community, local businesses at A Taste of Crown Point 2024 event
On the sunny evening of Friday, July 19, the City of Crown Point hosted the first day of its annual Taste of Crown Point event at Bulldog Park. Over 25 Crown Point-based food trucks and restaurants set up stalls to serve up their delicious products for attendees. This year’s installment of A Taste of Crown Point also featured live music, a splash pad, cornhole, and face painting. Crown Point residents and visitors from throughout the Region were in attendance. Mayor of Crown Point Pete Land believes that a Taste of Crown Point event is one of the most significant events the city puts on.
