Franciscan Health Dyer, Olympia Fields named Bariatric Centers of Excellence by Optum
Franciscan Health Dyer and Franciscan Health Olympia Fields were both recently named Bariatric Centers of Excellence (COE) by Optum. Bariatric departments belonging to the Optum bariatric COE program perform more successful bariatric procedures than many other facilities nearby. The Optum COEs also have fewer complications and readmissions, with 15% lower mortality rates, 16% lower inpatient hospital readmission, 12% lower reoperation rate for bariatric procedures and $4,239 lower average cost per surgical episode.

Crown Point resident expresses concern over fireworks debris
Stephanie Watkins appeared before the Crown Point City Council on Monday holding a box filled with burnt mortar and shrapnel as a result of a neighbor’s fireworks display. Watkins said the burning embers were deposited on her property on South Court Street as a result of a neighbor’s fireworks display on June 29. She expressed concern over prolonged noise and potential damage to her home and others in the neighborhood, as well as injuries that could occur — not unlike the incident that occurred in the 900 Block of North Arbogast Street in Griffith that same day when four homes were damaged and seven people were hurt.
Methodist ranked tops for racial inclusivity
Methodist Hospitals was named No. 1 in Indiana for racial inclusivity. The Lown Institute, a non-partisan healthcare think tank, recognized Methodist Hospitals for outstanding social responsibility in its Lown Institute Hospitals Index that ranks 3,600 hospitals around the country. The healthcare system with hospitals in Gary and Merrillville got an A grade for strong scores in metrics like health equity, patient outcomes and value of care.
