Lutheran Summer Music: A Liturgical Legacy Lives On
Valparaiso University has long been a beacon of light and learning, not only for our full-time students but also for the many young musicians who attend the Lutheran Summer Music (LSM) program. For over four decades, Lutheran Summer Music, the nation’s premier faith-based music academy for high school students, has offered a transformative experience for thousands of young musicians. In addition to advanced musical instruction and numerous performance opportunities, LSM students form an intentional community while living together on Lutheran college campuses for four weeks. Since 2017, Valparaiso University has been honored to host this inspiring community.
Lucas Spence Inks Deal with Astros
SIUE outfielder Lucas Spence (Beecher, Illinois) has signed a free agent deal with the Houston Astros. A First Team All-Ohio Valley Conference selection, Spence led the OVC in hitting with a .385 average in his lone season for the Cougars. Man who hid from police, burned victim's body sentenced to 5 years after pleading guilty
CROWN POINT — A Gary man was sentenced to five years in prison Thursday for killing an acquaintance in 2022 because the man "talked too much." Kenneth Burns, 52, pleaded guilty to reckless homicide, a level five felony, in connection with the crime. Level five felonies carry between one and six years in prison, which is significantly less than the 45 to 65 years required for murder. Prosecutors dropped his murder charge in exchange for his plea.

Tornados, derecho storm reported in Northwest Indiana on Monday
Northwest Indiana was hit with two tornadoes and a derecho storm Monday, according to the National Weather Service. A tornado was reported from Cedar Lake through Valparaiso traveling 29.1 miles with a peak of 90 mile per hour winds. Its max width was 300 yards, and it was recorded from 9:52 p.m. to 10:20 p.m., according to NWS.
Lake Station board backs November referendum vote
A united Lake Station School Board voted Wednesday to place a $1.3 million property tax referendum on the Nov. 5 general election ballot.
