Susan Wojcicki Dead: Google Chief Pays Tribute After Former YouTube CEO’s Death At 56

Business executive Susan Wojcicki, who served as YouTube’s chief executive officer for nine years, died Friday aged 56, her family have announced.

Her husband Dennis Troper shared that her death came after she had been living with non-small cell lung cancer for two years.

He confirmed the sad news with a Facebook post, writing:

“It is with profound sadness that I share the news of Susan Wojcicki passing. My beloved wife of 26 years and mother to our five children left us today after 2 years of living with non small cell lung cancer. Susan was not just my best friend and partner in life, but a brilliant mind, a loving mother, and a dear friend to many. Her impact on our family and the world was immeasurable. We are heartbroken, but grateful for the time we had with her. Please keep our family in your thoughts as we navigate this difficult time.”

Google CEO Sundar Pichai posted this tribute to X soon after the news was announced:

She is as core to the history of Google as anyone, and it’s hard to imagine the world without her. She was an incredible person, leader and friend who had a tremendous impact on the world and I’m one of countless Googlers who is better for knowing her. We will miss her dearly. Our thoughts with her family. RIP Susan.”

Wojcicki worked in the tech industry for over twenty years. Her biography includes that she was one of the first 20 employees at Google, which acquired YouTube in 2006 for $1.65billion. This came after, in 1998, she rented out the garage of her Menlo Park home to Google founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin, who at the time were Ph.D. students at Stanford University. She later led the company’s online advertising business and video service.

She was appointed CEO of YouTube in 2014, serving until resigning in February 2023. At the time, she explained she wanted to focus on her health and personal projects she was passionate about.
