‘Prison Break’ Races To No. 1 On Nielsen Streaming List As Fox Series Finds New Life On Netflix; ‘Umbrella Academy’ Comes In Second

It was another slow week for streaming originals from August 5 to August 11, with just one making it onto Nielsen’s overall streaming list. That was Netflix’s Umbrella Academy , which racked up nearly 1.5B viewing minutes in the week of the Season 4 premiere.

This isn’t exactly surprising, as the series was already seeing a boost in viewership in anticipation of the new season the week prior. It popped on the streaming originals list at No. 8 with 287M minutes viewed.

It’s a strong performance for the Netflix series, good enough for second place, just behind Prison Break , which is the latest licensed title to find a second life on the streamer. For Umbrella Academy , it’s still a bit of a deflation compared to Season 3, which secured more than 2B minutes viewed during its debut week in 2022 despite a more competitive streaming environment, premiering on the heels of the first half of Stranger Things 4.

It isn’t the only streaming series to lose some of its audience season-over-season, and it won’t be the last. It’s also likely to put up an even stronger number in the coming weeks, once Season 4 has notched a full week of availability.

The rest of the overall list was dominated by acquired titles, including some staples like Bluey , Grey’s Anatomy , and some animated titles like Family Guy and Bob’s Burgers.

Most notably, Prison Break soared to first place, up 111% from the week prior, when it landed on Netflix after seven years off air. Despite already being available on Hulu, the Netflix Effect proved itself once again, pushing the title to 1.6B minutes viewed.

House of the Dragon also claimed No. 5 on the list with 935M minutes viewed in the week following the Season 2 finale. That’s a slight decrease from the week prior, when the title managed to crack a billion minutes. The initial live viewing for the finale was included in the last interval’s total, so this number represents long tail viewing.

The prequel series also managed to put its predecessor back on the overall list as well. Game of Thrones came in at No. 9 with an impressive 689M minutes viewed that week.

Dexter and Fire Country rounded out the overall list. See more details below.
