County Commissioners hear from TriRivers Waterway Development Association

The Decatur County Commissioners met for their last meeting of June last Tuesday evening. Following the invocation, pledge, and approval of the agenda, one member of the public, Tori Green, took to the podium to address the council about local government’s use of executive sessions. Green previously spoke at last month’s city council meeting about the same issue, reciting the law pertaining to executive sessions.

Following this, a representative for the board of tax assessors requested that the assessors be able to meet with the commissioners at 8:30 AM prior to their next meeting (Tuesday, July 9), which the commissioners agreed to.

After this, the commissioners considered approval of a grant application from the district attorney’s office for forensic science improvement services. The total grant request amount came to $326,693. The board approved the application.

Next, the commissioners approved the errors and release report.

Lastly, the commissioners heard from Phillip Clayton, executive director of the TriRivers Waterway Development Association. Clayton presented the commissioners with a briefing regarding repairing the dam locks and restoring commercial navigation to the Flint River. According to Clayton, when he had last spoken at a commissioner’s meeting, he and his organization did not have the necessary funds for such plans. Now, he stated, they have $101 million, partly from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Bill.

Following this presentation, the commissioners gave their closing remarks, and the meeting was adjourned.
