DECATUR, Ill. (WCIA) — A solar project for the city of Decatur has reached an important milestone.

Three solar canopies are complete in the western part of the Civic Center parking lot. While intermittent work will continue in some fenced off areas, officials said the majority of the lot is now open for residents and visitors to get shaded parking lot.

A Peoria solar company is paying for the canopies. City officials previously estimated the approximate 2,600 solar panels will save $100,000 each year.

As contractors build identical canopies on the east side, that parking lot is closed. Decatur officials said they will continue to provide updates on the progress of the project.
