In “Pointe of No Return,” the third episode of the new Dance Moms reboot, Hampton brings in her daughter, Kaeli — a professional ballet dancer at Ballet West in Salt Lake City — to choreograph the week’s group number, titled “Telephone.”
The routine would put Audrey , the eldest member of Hampton’s junior elite team, to the test, as she would be performing en pointe.
Once Hampton reveals her daughter to be the “special guest choreographer,” Kaeli lays down the law for her mother’s junior elite team.
“You guys know me. You think she’s tough… You know, I’m tougher,” she says. “I’m not gonna have any of you guys making me look bad, right?
As rehearsals progress, Kaeli is tough on the girls, and notes in a confessional that she is aware of the “really, really difficult” choreography that she is giving Audrey. However, she explains that she is doing that because of Audrey’s mentality since returning from her time on Broadway.
“It’s whatever. I don’t care that much,” she continues. “Whoops.”
However, things take a turn for the worse when Audrey is lifting her leg backstage, just moments before she and her team are set to take the stage, and slams her foot into a crew member’s equipment.
Hampton replies, “Shh. Stop for a second, because you have no idea what’s happening. Do you understand? What happened back here wasn’t her fault—” but Kaeli refutes, “If it happened when she was on Broadway, she’d go out and go on stage. I know that.”
Hampton urges her daughter to “stop,” ultimately pulling her aside to settle their dispute. Nonetheless, Kaeli argues that Audrey “knows how to be a professional,” and that she herself “danced on a broken foot for a month.”
After Audrey is taken out on a stretcher, they must reblock the number, with Bellatrix taking Audrey’s place as the lead. While the team emerges victorious, Kaeli admits she’s still “a little bit pissed.”
“I’m happy because they’re happy. But I personally think that Audrey could have done it,” she says. “I danced on a broken foot for all of Nutcracker last season. My mom tends to baby her a lot and so does her mom, and it’s a little bit frustrating for me. Kind of being her big sister, it’s hard to watch a little bit.”
She adds, “I noticed that there wasn’t any swelling and something seemed a little fishy. I think it was her easy way of getting out of it because she was nervous and it was just the perfect excuse.”
Hampton spoke with DECIDER about having this drama with her daughter flesh out on camera, while praising her work as an “an up-and-coming choreographer.”
“As a dancer, she’s amazing, but I didn’t realize until the last couple of years just how much knowledge and potential she has as a choreographer. So I trust her implicitly,” she said. “But at the same time, the drama that went down on the show, there was a previous issue with Audrey and my daughter wasn’t aware of that. Something else happened backstage, and she didn’t have the full information before we kind of went at each other. So that was very real…she’s still young, she teaches a little differently than me.”
