Kee baseball senior pitcher Cam Lind delivers a pitch in the Hawks’ 10-0 home win over Turkey Valley in the Class 1A District 8 semifinal round of tournament play Tuesday, July 9. Lind allowed just one hit and two walks while striking out seven batters in five innings of scoreless mound work in the victory, also collecting a pair of singles in three at-bats to both drive in and score a run. Little Switzerland FFA Agronomy team brings home State Champion Honors ...
Four individuals of the Little Switzerland FFA Chapter from Waukon High School competed in the Agronomy career development event (CDE) at both the District and State levels earlier this summer. The team included members (left to right in the submitted photo above) Sarah Stock, Kendra Gibbs, Caleb Helgerson and Olivia Marti. May 13, the team competed at the Northeast Iowa District Contest held at Hawkeye Community College in Waterloo and was named the Reserve Champion Team. In the final individual standings, Olivia Marti placed 2nd, Sarah Stock placed 5th, Kendra Gibbs placed 12th, and Caleb Helgerson placed 16th.
Growing in the garden at recent youth sessions ...
Gardening and pizza went together perfectly in Waukon and Lansing at recent youth sessions hosted by Allamakee County Iowa State University Extension and Outreach. Youth learned the different parts of a plant, and how each part is edible depending on the fruit or vegetable. It was discussed which parts help make a pizza, while everyone designed their perfect pizza. Ideas ranged from pepperoni to ice cream to candy pizza. Youth used English muffins to make personal pizzas for lunch.

Two People Stabbed During Fight in Small Southeast Minnesota Town
Spring Valley, MN (KROC-AM News) - Fillmore County authorities are looking for the people involved in an altercation that left two people with stab wounds. Fillmore County Sheriff John DeGeorge says the incident occurred late Friday night outside the Kwik Trip store in Spring Valley. Deputies responded to reports of a fight shortly after 11:30 PM, but the people involved had already left the scene by the time they arrived.

Waukon baseball sophomore pitcher Colton O’Neill rears back to fire a pitch in the Indians’ 5-0 win over Starmont at Monona in the semifinal round of Class 2A District Tournament play Tuesday, July 9. O’Neill limited the Stars to just two hits and two walks while recording eight strikeouts in the shut-out victory, and he reached base three times with a bunt single, a walk and being hit by a pitch to score one run. BELLE PLAINE, Iowa (KCRG) - Inside Drahos Shoe Store, on Main Street in Belle Plaine, lives generations of knowledge. “My grandfather was a Shoemaker in Bohemia. In 1904, he immigrated to the US. He was 17 years old. He had $22.60 in his pocket,” says Dan Drahos, the current owner and operator of Drahos Shoe Store. Don’s grandfather used those talents to start up a shoe repair business in Belle Plaine during the Great Depression, and eventually passed the business along to his son.
SW falls in Warriors versus Warriors battle
Avenging last year’s regional semifinal game and a contest earlier this season against South Winn, Wapsie Valley pushed the Red and White out of the postseason Wednesday in the Class 2A Region 7 Semifinal, 9-3. South Winn ended the season with a 22-13 overall mark as the Upper Iowa Conference champions for the second straight year.
Decorah puller Van Duyn shares the challenge and excitement of tractor pulls
Tractor pulls always pack the stands at county fairs, and Decorah puller Don Van Duyn has been “pulling” for the last 27 years. Van Duyn, owner of SEE Electric of Decorah, said he first became interested in tractor pulls in 1993, and four years later, he bought his first pulling tractor –a Schreier’s John Deere Model 4010 – from a man in Wisconsin. Van Duyn named the machine “Birch Hollow Deer” because of all the deer which live around his home, and his new purchase went through an extensive rebuild.
Community Action to buy Smith building for $1 Winneshiek County
Winneshiek County plans to sell Decorah’s historic Smith building to Northeast Iowa Community Action. During Monday morning’s Winneshiek County Board of Supervisors meeting, NEICAC Director Trisha Wilkins reported that the NEICAC Board of Directors recently approved the purchase of the Smith building – located at 305 Montgomery St. – from the county for $1. The formal deeding of the property will require a public hearing at a later date. The board generally agreed to on a tentative transfer date of Sept. 3, and will continue discussions with NEICAC regarding the expected sale.

Gov. Reynolds announces FEMA’s approval of Disaster Recovery Temporary Housing Program, opens applications
(Des Moines) Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds has announced that the state’s Disaster Recovery Temporary Housing Program is now open for applications following approval from FEMA. The program aims to provide temporary housing, including recreational vehicles and travel trailers, for up to six months at no cost to Iowans whose homes were severely damaged, destroyed, or deemed uninhabitable in counties under a federal disaster declaration. As of now, the eligible counties are Adair, Adams, Buena Vista, Cedar, Clay, Emmet, Jasper, Lyon, Montgomery, Obrien, Plymouth, Polk, Sioux, and Story. Additional counties may become eligible as the recovery process and damage assessments continue.

Temperatures will likely be in the upper 70s for highs tomorrow. Highs will stay pretty consistent over the next 4-5 days. Slight rain chances will return for the weekend with a few shots for a shower or storm both Saturday and Sunday – but not a washout. Afternoon warming next week will push temperatures into the lower 80s and the chance for an afternoon isolated storm is possible. Otherwise, enjoy the sunshine and lower humidity!
