    College wrestling: Hemauer qualifies for NCAA Championships

    The No. 5 ranked Parkside Wrestling team competed in the 2024 NCAA Division II Super Region V tournament on Saturday, with ten student-athletes, including DeForest’s Brody Hemauer, vying for spots in the NCAA Division II Wrestling Championships.

    Parkside had a strong day on the mat with seven wrestlers earning top-three finishes and locking up spots in the NCAA Championships. In the team category, Parkside finished second as a team.

    Shane Corrigan and Reece Worachek took home regional titles for the Rangers. Cayden Henschel, Brody Hemauer, and Lloyd Reynolds took home second-place finishes, while Jalen Spuhler and Ben Durocher placed third to qualify for the National Championships.

    This will be the third trip to the National Championships for Worachek, second for Henschel, Corrigan, and Spuhler, and first for Hemauer, Durocher, and Reynolds.

    No. 8 Brody Hemauer went 3-1 on Saturday, securing a second-place finish. He opened the day with a 6-2 win by decision. Hemauer defeated Coy Gunderson in a close 4-1 sudden victory to move into the semifinals. There Brody picked up a 7-3 win by decision over number seven-ranked Cole Glazier of St. Cloud State. Ultimately Hemauer would come up just short, falling in the championship match by an 8-3 decision.

    No. 3 ranked Shane Corrigan rolled through his first two rounds of the day on Saturday, winning by a major decision and tech fall. He then had to battle through number seven ranked Conor Knopick in the semifinals, where Corrigan secured a tight 4-3 decision. Corrigan then took down number two ranked Jaxon Rohman 9-6 in overtime to secure the regional title in the 125lb weight class.

    No. 7 ranked Reece Worachek had multiple closely contested bouts en route to his 184lb regional title. He opened the day with a 4-3 decision win to move to the semifinals. There he matched up with number eight-ranked Bryce Fitzpatrick. There he was able to secure the takedown needed to come away with the 4-3 decision. Reece then put the icing on the cake, defeating number four ranked Cade Mueller of Augustana in the championship by a 4-2 decision to secure the title.

    No. 3 ranked Cayden Henschel started quickly on Saturday, winning by 17-0 tech fall to move to the semifinals. There he defeated number six ranked Tate Murty of Upper Iowa in a close 8-7 decision to move into the championship. Cayden came up short in the championship round, falling to number five ranked Hunter Burnett of Augustana.

    Lloyd Reynolds went 2-1 on Saturday, securing a second-place finish. Reynolds started the day with a closely fought 2-1 decision win over Elijah Novak of St. Cloud State. Lloyd then defeated Zach Peterson of Augustana by a 4-2 decision to move into the championship. Reynolds came up short in the championship, falling by an 11-1 decision to number seven-ranked Luke Tweeton of Mary.

    No. 11 ranked Jalen Spuhler lost in the semifinal round but battled his way back to secure a third-place finish and a spot at the National Championships. Spuhler opened the day with a quick 18-3 tech fall win to move into the semifinals. There he would lose to number seven-ranked Cael Larson of Augustana by a 7-4 decision. Jalen battled back, defeating number eight-ranked Wyatt Turnquist of Northern State in the consolation semifinals, earning a spot in the third-place bout. There Spuhler came out strong early, defeating Ethen Doty of Upper Iowa to secure his spot once again at the National Championships.

    Ben Durocher lost in the semifinals but battled back to earn a third-place finish to secure a trip to the National Championships. He opened the night with a win over number ten ranked Eric Faught of Upper Iowa by a 4-2 decision to move into the semifinals. There Ben fell to number nine ranked Devin Bahr of Northern State. Durocher battled back, defeating Caleb Meunier in the consolation semifinals by a 5-0 decision. He then locked up his trip to the National Championships with a 4-1 sudden victory over Faught of Upper Iowa, who he defeated earlier in the day.

    No. 7 ranked Matthew Chi finished fourth in the region. Chi fell in his opening match of the day by sudden victory. He then rebounded, winning by 5-4 and 8-5 decisions to advance into the consolation semifinals. He then advanced to the third place bout, defeating Wayne Joint of Minot St in a 4-1 sudden victory. Chi came up just short in the third-place bout, falling by a 10-4 decision.

    Brady Schuh finished fourth in the region. Schuh lost in his opening match of the day but was able to fight his way back, winning by an overtime fall and a major decision. He then advanced to the third place bout with an 11-5 win by decision over number eight ranjked Tyler Wagener of Augustana. Schuh came up short in the third-place bout, falling by a 4-1 sudden victory to Chase Bloomquist of Nothern State.

    Chase Stegall finished 2-2 on the day. He won his opening match by a 17-2 tech fall over Isaiah Laguna. He then lost a close contest by a 5-4 decision to number six-ranked Max Ramberg of Augustana. Stegall won once again on the consolation side by tech fall, advancing to the consolation quarterfinals, but he would ultimately come up short, falling by a 13-5 major decision to Treyton Cacek of Northern State.
