1874 Distilling keeps it local in Del Norte
Historic distillery in historic hotel a draw for the San Luis Valley. Within the agricultural hotspot of the San Luis Valley, 1874 Distilling became the first local distillery when it opened more than four years ago. It’s rather surprising, given the sheer size of the valley (larger than some eastern states) and the fact that it produces many grains utilized by far-away distilleries. As the valley’s first, the founders of 1874 realized the value in producing spirits with local ingredients and running a tight-knit operation where they could slash transportation costs and build communal relationships with farmers.

A grand opening for The Church Project: A Community Arts Center in Monte Vista is scheduled for Friday, July 5. The date marks one year since artist Madeleine Ahlborn moved into the space and, along with an army of volunteers, began transforming the shuttered First Baptist Church on South Broadway Street into her vision of a community arts center.
Xcel seeking $1.82 billion wildfire mitigation program expansion
Xcel Energy is proposing a $1.85 billion program to continue and expand its wildfire mitigation program through 2027. It will ultimately cost the average residential customer about $8.88 per month by January 1, 2025. The bill increases will be incremental based on the progress Xcel makes with the program, and the amounts will change as part of the company’s quarterly cost adjustment filings with the Colorado Public Utilities Commission, according to Robert Kenney, president of Xcel Energy Colorado.

Low-Level Helicopter Flights to Image Geology over Southwestern Colorado to Resume
Low-level helicopter flights are slated to begin over a broad region of southwestern Colorado to image geology using airborne geophysical technology. Flying will commence in mid to late June 2024 and will take up to 2 months to complete, weather and wildfire restrictions permitting. Flights will cover areas within Chaffee, Gunnison, and Saguache counties.
