A 60-year-old man who was fatally assaulted late last month in Wilmington has been identified by police as Dwayne Clifton.

Officers were dispatched to Wilmington's Price Run neighborhood about 12:40 a.m. on July 29 where they found Clifton in the 300 block of E. 27th St.

More: He'd stopped to help a broken-down motorist. Then, this Sussex firefighter was killed

Clifton, who was suffering from a head injury when found, was taken to an area hospital. Police said he died the following day.

Wilmington's Criminal Investigations Division and the state's Division of Forensic Sciences determined Clifton’s injuries were sustained during an assault at that location, said David Karas, a police spokesperson.

Investigators have not said how Clifton was assaulted.

"At this time, this incident remains under active investigation, but I can confirm that the assault did not involve a firearm or knife," Karas said.

Anyone with information about this incident should contact Detective Brendan Shea at (302) 576-3649. People can also provide information to Delaware Crime Stoppers at (800) TIP-3333. Send tips or story ideas to Esteban Parra at (302) 324-2299 or eparra@delawareonline.com .
