WILMINGTON — Evan Barbin has seen his brother’s Austin and Zach celebrate big golf wins.

That’s made Barbin want to accomplish some things on the course himself.

“I’ve always had faith in my game,” Barbin was in a story quoted on DSGA.com. “I do learn a lot from Austin and Zach’s experiences. I’ve got no jealousy towards them. It’s just great to always have people to play with and we all support each other in any way we can. It’s just who we are.”

On Monday, it was Evan’s turn to sit at the top of the leaderboard after he fired an opening-round 69 at the 73rd annual DSGA Delaware Amateur at White Clay Creek Country Club.

Nick Ciocca, who will be freshman at Notre Dame and past champion Amory Davis (2007), of Bidermann Golf Club, sit in second after scoring rounds of 70.

The 20-year-old Barbin, from Elkton, Md. is heading to his junior year at Liberty University.

The wind, blowing steadily with heavy gusts mingled throughout the day, was a factor on Monday. The scoring average was 81.97.

Barbin didn’t mind the wind, however.

“One of my strengths is flighting the ball low, which was key today in these conditions,” Barbin was quoted. “All you can do is hit the shot you intend to and move on. The wind can play tricks with your mind and swing. I just wanted to trust my short game.

“This golf course isn’t your average Philadelphia golf course. There’s no room for error here.”

On Tuesday, the field will be cut to the low 36 and ties, which leads to a 36-hole final day on Wednesday.
