SUNY Delhi Culinary Team Earns Silver at Nationals

DELHI, N.Y (WIVT/WBHG) – SUNY Delhi took second place in a national culinary competition over the weekend.

Delhi’s hot food team competed in the 2024 American Culinary Federation Student Team of the Year competition in Phoenix, Arizona. Delhi competed against three other titleholders from around the nation, creating four-course menus for judging.

Delhi’s menu “Journey through the Catskills” highlighted regional ingredients such as chicken, fish, and dairy from local farms as well as presenting classical and modern techniques throughout the meal.

While first place went to Asheville-Buncombe Technical Community College from Asheville, North Carolina, the judges praised Delhi for the caliber of food they presented.

The students who participated on the team were Brennan Spencer, McKena Giles, Moses Rojas, Jahnasia Sutton, Michael Fanning, Sarthak Thapa, and Samuel Giordano. Chef Victor Sommo co-coached the team with Chef Sean Pehrsson. Both chefs are long-time culinary instructors at SUNY Delhi with years of competition experience.

“They worked hard and did exactly what they trained to do. I couldn’t ask for a better team. They are motivated to do it again next year – and to do it even better,” said Sommo.

SUNY Delhi has long been recognized as one of the best culinary schools on the nation. This success for the culinary program only adds to the more than 500 individual and team medals won in regional and national competitions over the past 10 years.
