Quirky home in Maumee draws national attention on 'Zillow Gone Wild' page
A house for sale in Maumee has gone viral on the “Zillow Gone Wild” Facebook page for an eccentric feature originally meant to deflect unwanted attention: the house is covered — floor to ceiling, inside and out — with bulletproof Lexan paneling. The house, previously owned and occupied by Trudy Stranahan of the Champion Spark Plug Company’s founding family, also boasts a robust driveway that cost an estimated $300,000 to build, plus $100,000 in fences. Breezeways connect the house to two outbuildings, one of which hosts a gym with myriad equipment, in addition to more workout equipment inside the main house. “She was just a unique person,” said Hanna Modene, a Realtor with the Jon Modene team at Re/max Masters, which listed the property. “I don’t think she liked not having security.” The property sits on five acres overlooking the Silver Lake and bordering Side Cut Metropark. It was listed last week for $399,900.

Card shower announced for Eugene Baker’s 103rd birthday
LAURA — The family of Eugene (Gene) E. Baker, who turns 103 on Aug. 8, invites everyone to participate in a card shower to celebrate his birthday. Baker was born on Aug. 8, 1921. He is the son of the late David and Kate Jane (Cordier) Baker. He lived his most of his life in the Laura area. He also spent time serving his country in the U.S. Army Air Corps during WWII.
More than 300 local performers and artists will be at free Art In the City event
Across downtown Dayton, art of all mediums will be celebrated at the annual Art in the City event. The Aug. 3 festival is part of the Downtown Dayton Partnership’s “Summer in the City” series. There will be live performances, art on display, food trucks and activities for all ages.
Spangler’s Dum-Dums Celebrate 100 Years
Spangler Candy Company was established in 1906. However, it was in 1953 when Spangler bought Akron Candy Company which originally created the Dum-Dum sucker in 1924. While Spangler Candy Company has six brands under their belt including Bit-O Honey, Circus Peanuts, Sweethearts, Necco, Spangler Candy Canes, and Dum-Dum Suckers; it’s the Dum-Dum’s that have been their staple since they took ownership of the sucker in 1924.
Chief Angel Cortes of the Lima Police Department recognized by Lima City Council as he nears retirement
LIMA, OH (WLIO) - Lima City Council recognizes Police Chief Angel Cortes as he gets ready to enter retirement. In a resolution passed Monday night, Lima City Council shared their appreciation for Chief Cortes' leadership and service to the Lima Police Department and his contributions to making Lima a safe community for all. Since taking the Police Chief's oath back in June of 2022, Chief Cortes has focused on various projects, including the recruitment of new officers from area high schools and colleges, the increase of salaries, and making sure the community stays fed through the "Filling the Gap" program.
