DELRAY BEACH — A Broward County man is facing federal charges after two Palm Beach County bank robberies, one of which ended in a fatal crash in July and an injury to a Palm Beach County sheriff's deputy.

The man, 44-year-old Courtney Mallory, was arrested by FBI agents at his Coconut Creek residence on July 17, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office .

On July 18, he appeared in West Palm Beach federal court for his initial hearing. He was charged with the bank robberies at a Boca Raton-area Truist bank on June 5 and at a Delray Beach-area Bank of America on July 12.

According to the criminal complaint, Mallory walked into the Boca Raton-area Truist bank on State Road 441 about 9:30 a.m., wearing a mask and wielding what appeared to be a firearm. He demanded money from employees and forced bank tellers to take him to the vault, the complaint said. Then he fled with $20,204 in a dark blue Nissan Altima.

Suspect reportedly wore mask, apparent firearm during bank robberies

Mallory is accused of robbing the Bank of America branch at Jog and Lake Ida roads about 10:30 a.m. on July 12. Once again, he was wearing a mask and brandishing what appeared to be a firearm. He fled again in a dark blue Nissan, this time with $21,242, the criminal complaint said.

The Delray Beach-area robbery ended in the death of an 80-year-old man and injury of Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office deputy, after the deputy's SUV collided with the older man's vehicle west of Boynton Beach .

The deputy had been responding to a report of the bank robbery, the sheriff's office said. Neither the man nor the deputy has been identified by law enforcement.

The deputy was southbound on Jog Road when the crash occurred south of Woolbright Road near Beth Israel Memorial Chapel. The 80-year-old man was northbound on Jog in a beige 2005 Hyundai and was attempting to make a left turn into the business center when the patrol car struck the Hyundai on its right side, according to Florida Highway Patrol investigators.

A witness said the 80-year-old man, in an attempt to get out of the way, inadvertently pulled in front of the deputy, who was not able to react in time and smashed into the Hyundai. The elderly man died at the scene of the crash.

The deputy, 33, was taken to Delray Medical Center for treatment of his injuries, the FHP report said.

On July 17, when Mallory was arrested, and during a separate search of his Nissan, agents recovered the clothing and backpack he wore during the robberies, a black pellet gun and thousands of dollars in cash, some of which were wrapped in Truist and Bank of America bands, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.

Mallory is scheduled for a pretrial detention hearing July 25 in West Palm Beach.
