An American Airlines flight traveling from Boston to Rochester made an emergency landing at the Syracuse Hancock International Airport on Wednesday afternoon.

Andy Moore, director of the Frederick Douglass Greater Rochester International Airport , said there was "a maintenance issue during the flight" that required the aircraft to divert to Syracuse, where the plane landed safely at 3:24 p.m.

Moore said that although it was reported that there was smoke within the cockpit, he could not confirm that report.

After the emergency landing, passengers exited the aircraft, which was operated by Piedmont Airlines, and were transported by bus to the Rochester airport.

The flight - American Airlines 5716 - was initially scheduled to land in Rochester at approximately 4 p.m., Moore said.
