When it comes to saving, or even creating, space, pretty much all of us could use a bit of help. Enter TikTok creator Kayleigh Sherbourne , who needed to find a way to make more space for her quickly growing kiddos, and while she couldn’t just pop on an extra room like adding toppings to a pizza, she could make their shared room feel like two separate spaces. And boy, did she succeed!

The challenge was simple but tough to tackle—how to give each child their own side, which could be decorated to their heart's content while offering them some degree of privacy. How she did it is the cool part, though. First off, Kayleigh built and installed several Kallax units from IKEA . Picture this—a couple of two-by-eight Kallaxes on the bottom, set upright so they are taller than they are long. On top of these towering units, she stacked two four-by-four Kallaxes, creating a faux-wall that nearly touches the ceiling. She added some screws between each piece as well as the wall so nothing would come tumbling down from a small bump.

To add some privacy, Kayleigh cut two plywood sheets to fit onto half of the Kallax units. She painted them white to match the units, then placed these plywood sheets in a staggered fashion so that the view was fully blocked from one side to the other. This was a genius move that ensured neither of the kids could engage in an impromptu staring contest through the empty bookcase.

Hey, Can You Add Some Functional Storage?

To make each side functional and a bit more personalized, Kayleigh added some shelves and drawers within the Kallax cubes. Not stopping there, she also fixed mirrors onto the back of the plywood sheets. This smart touch not only opened up the space visually but also provided a spot for each girl to check her outfit, thus reducing the number of times they would barge into the bathroom yelling, “I need the mirror!” Floating shelves were added for tiny knick-knacks, and hanging baskets gave each child more storage space because, let's face it, kids have a lot of stuff.

For the final touch of privacy, Kayleigh extended a tension rod from the Kallax wall to the room’s wall and hung a sheer curtain. This not only added a bit of elegance to the setup but also provided a soft barrier that still allowed light to filter through. The end result was a perfectly partitioned space that both girls can enjoy, without (hopefully) getting on each other’s nerves too much.
