Lady Wolves Bested in Quarters Extras
The Winfield-Mt. Union softball team wrapped up their season in the regional quarterfinal round of the Class 1A tournament last week, falling victim to a comeback by Holy Trinity Catholic, 10-9, in nine innings. The Crusaders started the game with a run in the first. The Lady Wolves took their first lead with a five run third. HTC chipped away with two in the fifth and regained the advantage with a four run sixth to go up 7-5. Down to the final three outs of their season, it was WMU’s turn to rally, scoring twice in the top of the seventh to force extra innings. After a scoreless eighth for both sides, the Lady Wolves posted a pair of runs in the ninth. The Wolves couldn’t close out the postseason win in the bottom half, as the Crusaders rallied with their backs against the wall, scoring three times to walk-off the Wolves.
