Avalanche should pursue Blackhawks veteran forward

    By Michael DeRosa,

The Colorado Avalanche are entering the 2024 NHL Offseason with several forwards on expired deals. Jonathan Drouin, Andrew Cogliano, Brandon Duhaime, Yakov Trenin, and Joel Kiviranta can all hit the market on July 1. Zach Parise also retired after the Avalanche's playoff run ended.

Thus, it would not be surprising if the Avalanche look to add more forward depth. It is no secret that they could use more offensive production from their bottom six. One player who they should consider taking a shot on because of this is Chicago Blackhawks forward Tyler Johnson.

Johnson, 33, quietly had another solid season for the Blackhawks, posting 17 goals and 31 points in 67 games. While these are not jaw-dropping offensive totals, they are still decent. This is especially so when noting that the Blackhawks were among the worst clubs in the NHL this season. Johnson didn't have too many big-name players to work with.

If the Avalanche signed Johnson, he would work on either of their bottom two lines. This is because he offers excellent versatility, being able to play both down the middle and on the wing. In addition, his offensive play would make him a potential option for their second power-play unit.

When noting that Johnson is unlikely to command much money and term on his next deal, there could be a good match here between him and the Avalanche. It will be intriguing to see if the Avs make a push for him from here.
