The Colorado Avalanche have made a big move, re-signing forward Casey Mittelstadt to a three-year, $17.25 million contract ($5.75 million AAV).

Mittelstadt, 25, was acquired by the Avalanche from the Buffalo Sabres in exchange for defenseman Bowen Byram in March. It was a significant move for the Avalanche, as they picked up their much-needed second-line center. Now, they have locked him for three more years, which is big.

Mittelstadt is coming off a strong season, posting 18 goals - a new career high - to go along with 57 points and a plus-10 rating. He was also impactful during the playoffs, recording three goals and nine points in 11 games. The Avalanche are now expecting more of that from the Minnesota native during his new deal.

Mittelstadt is getting a nice raise on his new deal, as his cap hit on his last deal was only $2.5 million. However, due to his excellent play over the last few seasons, he has undoubtedly earned this big payday.

It will be intriguing to see if Mittelstadt can take another step forward in his development as he continues to adjust to being in Colorado. He has some big-time stars to work with the Avalanche, so perhaps he hasn't hit his offensive ceiling just yet.
