    Terrell Davis.

United Airlines has issued a statement, apologizing to Denver Broncos legend Terrell Davis following an incident on Saturday that led to the Hall of Famer being handcuffed and removed from a flight.

The 51-year-old former running back said that he tapped a flight attendant's arm to get his attention during Saturday's travel and the employee accused Davis of hitting him. When the plane landed, six law enforcement officers got on board, handcuffed Davis and took him off the flight.

"This is clearly not the kind of travel experience we strive to provide, and we have reached out to Mr. Davis’s team to apologize," United said, via CNN . "We have removed the flight attendant from duty while we closely review this matter."

The 1998 MVP wrote on Instagram on Monday that he was flying with his wife and three children when his son asked a flight attendant for ice. After the attendant didn't respond, Davis says he lightly tapped his arm and he shouted, "Don't hit me."

The two-time Super Bowl champion and Super Bowl XXXII MVP called the incident "humiliating, disturbing and traumatizing" and added that once law enforcement realized what had happened, they apologized and let him go. Davis said that his lawyers would be in touch with the airline.
