DENVER (KDVR) — When you remove your valuable items before locking your car (if you don’t already, police strongly recommend doing so), don’t forget things like keys and garage door remotes.

Police in Denver are reminding residents to protect themselves and keep burglars at bay after someone allegedly broke into a resident’s car and used a garage door remote in the car to get inside and steal thousands of dollars worth of e-bikes.

The Denver Police Department told FOX31 that the alleged e-bike theft happened just after midnight early Monday morning in the 3800 block of North Newton Street. Police responded to a report of a burglary and the victim said two e-bikes with a value of $6,000 were stolen.

“We’re sure that we can all agree that burglars are terrible, and the best way to combat them is to reduce their opportunity to victimize us,” DPD said in a post .

Police emphasize that one of the best ways to prevent break-ins and theft is to remove valuables from your vehicle, including garage door remotes.

“This reduces any temptation to break into your vehicle and eliminates their potential access to your garage and home,” DPD said.

The case that prompted the warning is being investigated, but no arrests have been made and anyone with information is asked to call Metro Denver Crime Stoppers at 720-913-7867.
