DENVER (KDVR) — Longhorn cattle might not be a common sight for Denver metro residents, but a traditional event celebrating the state’s western heritage will bring a herd of them through downtown Castle Rock.

The Western Heritage Welcome Cattle Drive is the kickoff of the Douglas County Fair and Rodeo, which is scheduled from July 26 through Aug. 4.

The cattle drive is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. on Friday. Interested onlookers should grab a spot along the barricades on Perry Street for a look at the traditional cattle drive.

Cowhands will drive a herd of Texan longhorns from Rock Park along Perry Street to a corral near Festival Park. Along with the eye-catching cattle, the Rocky Mountain Indigenous Dancers will lead the cattle drive with a processional performance.

Activities are scheduled to follow after the cattle drive at Festival Park, including ongoing performances by the Rocky Mountain Indigenous Dancers, plus opportunities for “old-time photos,” food trucks and other entertainment.

Herds of Longhorn cattle were once commonly seen being driven through Colorado. The annual cattle drive is partly to help remember and honor the heritage of the Goodnight-Loving Trail. The trail provided access from Texas to Wyoming, connecting ranches in each of the states the trail passed through.

Remnants of the trail can still be found throughout the state — in Pueblo, the Goodnight Barn (built by Charles Goodnight ) was placed on the National Register of Historic Places. The trail’s other namesake is Oliver Loving, a cattle driver from Texas , according to the Texas State Historical Association.

Rules, road closures for the Western Heritage Cattle Drive

Anyone hoping to get some aerial pictures of the Longhorn cattle drive will be out of luck if they’re planning to use drones: Drone photography is strictly prevented during the event, as they can startle the cattle and possibly cause a stampede.

Additionally, the town will restrict anyone from parking on Perry Street from 5 a.m. on July 26, in addition to the parking at Rock Park. Perry Street will be closed to traffic from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. from Scott Street to South Street.

Anyone attending the parade is reminded to stay behind the protective barriers on Perry Street and keep safety in mind.
