Denver Broncos running back Javonte Williams.

Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton asked running back Javonte Williams to make one change this offseason, and it's already paying dividends in training camp.

In 2022, Williams suffered a season-ending ACL/LCL tear. The 24-year-old returned last season, but he was slowed down after bulking up during his recovery. In 16 games, he averaged a career-low 3.6 yards per carry.

While watching his tape at North Carolina, Payton suggested Williams trim down to his college playing weight (220 pounds). He heeded the advice and is regaining his explosiveness.

"He's lost weight. He looks trim. I thought he looked sharp today," Payton said of Williams in a Wednesday news conference . "He looked much different. His weight's down and I'm proud of him."

Impressing Payton is critical for Williams. The former second-round pick — who is entering the final year of his rookie contract — faces an uncertain future with the franchise and increased competition.

Second-year RB Jaleel McLaughlin could carve out a bigger role in 2024 after leading the team in yards per carry (5.4) in 17 games last season. Denver also drafted Notre Dame RB Audric Estime, who tied for third in the FBS in rushing TDs in 2023 (18 in 12 games).

Williams could still rejuvenate his career. Keep in mind he showed promise during his rookie season in 2021, rushing 903 yards on 203 carries in 17 games. It's only one practice, but it seems he's on the right track and could emerge as Denver's workhorse again.
