DENVER (KDVR) — A water main break on a road in a Denver metro area neighborhood Sunday caused water to shoot 15 feet in the air and opened up a 12-foot sinkhole , according to the Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office.

The water main break was in the 4300 block of East Hinsdale Place in Centennial.

The break was caused by an 8-inch pipe bursting, but it was unknown what caused that to happen.

Denver Water was on the scene of the break trying to put a temporary patch on the line. The utility is expected to return later to put a more permanent patch in place.

Water service had returned by the evening.

Residents in the area of the break were told they could be without water for “quite some time” until repairs were completed, the sheriff’s office said.

The intersection of East Hinsdale Place and South Clermont Drive was closed due to the break. Fire crews with South Metro Fire Rescue were also on the scene of the water main break.
