As the Denver Broncos prepare for the 2024 season, they are hoping that they have found their next franchise quarterback in Bo Nix. However, not too long ago, they passed up on a quarterback who could have drastically changed the course of the franchise.

In 2018, the Broncos had the fifth overall pick in a draft that was loaded with quarterback prospects at the time. John Elway was the general manager for the Broncos at time and selected edge rusher Bradley Chubb.

The decision to draft Chubb didn’t work out all that well for the Broncos, as the former No. 5 pick isn’t even on the team anymore. Chubb was traded to the Miami Dolphins not too long ago.

You know Denver could have taken at that spot? Josh Allen.

Recently, John Elway was reflecting on his time as the general manager of the Broncos and spoke about passing up on Allen.

Here’s what he had to say about a recent interaction with Allen .

“Last year I played [golf] with him and I’m wondering, ‘How long is it going to take him to realize that I passed on him and took Bradley Chubb instead?’ And it took him two and a half holes,” Elway recalled during a recent appearance on Barstool Sports’ “Pardon my Take” podcast.

“And I loved him. But it just didn’t work out. He was my type. That was probably my biggest mistake of my GM days, was not taking Josh.”

Elway stepped down as the general manager of the Broncos in 2020. Despite being a great quarterback himself in the league, he struggled to find a franchise quarterback for the Broncos.

If the Broncos would have selected Allen and he became the quarterback he is with the Buffalo Bills, the franchise would be in great shape. Allen is one of the top-five quarterbacks in the league and has had a lot of team success with the Bills.

Since being drafted by Buffalo, Allen has totaled 22,703 passing yards, 167 passing yards, 78 interceptions and a 92.2 passer rating. In the same time frame, the Broncos have gone through 13 different starting quarterbacks. The position has been a turnstile for Denver.

Now, the Broncos hope they have found their new franchise quarterback in Nix after a failed trade that brought Russell Wilson to town. In addition to Nix, the Broncos also have brought in Zach Wilson from the Jets to see if they can turn his career around.

Looking back at what could have been is always interesting, as Allen being the starting quarterback for the Broncos would have likely led to a lot of success for the franchise in recent years.
