Latest Development Not Good News For Broncos QB Zach Wilson
By Michael Gallagher,
The Denver Broncos quarterback competition appears to be down to a two-man race, and unfortunately for former No. 2 overall pick Zach Wilson, he doesn’t seem to be one of them.
Rookie Bo Nix took the majority of starter’s reps during Monday’s practice and head coach Sean Payton seemingly skipped over Wilson on Tuesday in favor of fifth-year passer Jarrett Stidham, who took the first-team reps on a day that was scheduled to be Wilson’s with the starters.
Payton was noncommittal after practice about Wilson getting reps with the starters moving forward, simply offering a “We’ll see,” and he was bullish about the fact that he knew what he was doing in juggling his three QBs.
“Look, we've got a plan,” Payton told reporters. “Bo ran with the 1s [on Monday], Zach with the 2s. Today, it was [Stidham] with the 1s. No news to announce there. I know you're looking for it, but [there is none].”
Despite Payton’s cryptic remarks, getting demoted to the third team on a day he was supposed to play with the firs team doesn’t seem like good news for Wilson, who’s really struggled to find his footing in the NFL after three mediocre seasons with the New York Jets.
If Nix takes the first-team reps and Wilson the third-team again during Wednesday’s practice, it likely signals that Payton has made up his mind about at least one of his QBs.
