Where Zach Wilson stands with Broncos after unofficial depth chart is revealed

Zach Wilson isn’t going to ride as the Broncos’ starter in the immediate future.
Denver released its first unofficial depth chart Tuesday before its preseason opener Sunday against the Colts, with veteran quarterback Jarrett Stidham listed as QB1 followed by Wilson and rookie Bo Nix, the 12th overall selection in this year’s draft.
When asked if Wilson would have opportunities to practice with the starters, head coach Sean Payton replied, “We’ll see,” per ESPN .
It’s been a rollercoaster of an offseason for Wilson, who was traded to Denver in April following three disappointing seasons in New York.
Upon getting an opportunity to practice with the Broncos’ starters during organized team activities (OTAs) in June, Wilson appeared “rattled” and “struggled to find a rhythm,” The Denver Post reported at the time.
A quarterback battle has been brewing at Broncos camp this summer with Nix showing promise.
Despite being listed third on the depth chart, it isn’t time for Nix to hit the panic button as other Broncos rookies were indicated as third- or fourth-stringers.
Stidham getting the starting nod shouldn’t come as much of a surprise as he started the final two games last season for the Broncos, whom he’s been with since March 2023.
It remains to be seen if the Broncos will carry three quarterbacks on their final 53-man roster.
Payton, entering his second year at the helm in Denver, replied , “Possibly,” when asked about having three quarterbacks on the roster.
Wilson is coming off three mediocre seasons with the Jets, throwing 23 touchdowns and 25 interceptions.
Wilson was intended to serve as Aaron Rodgers’ backup for the Jets last season but was thrust into action in Week 1 when the former league MVP went down with an Achilles injury.
