Derry looking for continued success in move to Class 3A
It was a huge leap for the Derry football team in 2023. The Trojans ended a 20-game losing streak, won five games and qualified for the WPIAL Class 2A playoffs. Even though the Trojans (5-6 overall, 4-3 Allegheny Conference) fell to McGuffey, 25-13, in the postseason, the program made major strides.
Latrobe lineman knows now’s the time for Wildcats to strike
Hype at Latrobe began with the players long before the community began to stir. The football team is a playoff contender again, and guys like Cody Krall saw it coming. “Every group of seniors grow up saying they can’t wait to play together in high school and they talk about how good they’re going to be,” said Krall, a senior two-way starter. “We have always said that and we’ve embraced it. We knew we could be that team. It’s surreal to be in that spot.”
RIVER VALLEY SCHOOL BOARD VOTES TO TEMPORARILY HOST FOOTBALL GAMES AT ERNIE WIDMAR FIELD
The question of where River Valley football games will be held this year was answered at Tuesday night’s school board meeting. By a 4-to-3 vote, the board approved temporarily holding home games at Ernie Widmar Field until the new athletic complex is ready at the Blairsville campus, which is expected to be September 6th. They also approved a motion to hold practices at the Saltsburg campus for the rest of the week, then have the team practice on the new turf field starting on Monday.

Franklin Regional graduate Spencer Lee was narrowly denied gold in the 2024 Olympics on Friday, as he lost in the 57-kilogram freestyle wrestling final. Lee was ousted via decision 4-2 by Japan’s Rei Higuchi. Lee opened his Olympics run with a 3-2 victory against China’s Wanhao Zou, followed with a 12-2 quarterfinals triumph against Bekzat Almaz Uulu of Kyrgyzstan, and then ousted Uzbekistan’s Gulpmjon Abdullaev 14-4 in the semifinals. Lee, a 2017 grad of the Panthers, competed collegiately at the University of Iowa.
Cutrell overcomes shaky start to capture title at Westmoreland County Senior Amateur
It was another close finish to the Westmoreland County Golf Association’s Senior Championship on Wednesday at Latrobe Country Club. Arnie Cutrell had a three-shot lead over 2023 champion Sean Knapp heading into the nine-hole third round and was clinging to a one-shot lead as they made their way to the final hole.
