Several Deadly Viruses Detected in Central New York Mosquitoes
More deadly viruses are making their way into Central New York. And mosquitoes are to blame. Traps from Mosquito pools in Onondaga County show the presence of several viruses. The West Nile and Flanders viruses were detected in the Town of Cicero. Both viruses along with the Eastern Equine Encephalitis and Highlands J viruses were found in East Syracuse. That's in addition to the Flanders and Jamestown Canyon viruses discovered on July 16.
Even More Tornadoes Touch Down in New York State
As the National Weather Service continues to tally up the record number of tornadoes that struck the week of July 15, more storms are dropping even more twisters in parts of the state. This all comes in addition to the remnants of Hurricane Beryl spawning seven tornadoes across New York earlier in July.
New York Announces $15 Million Funding Boost for Suicide Prevention Among Underserved Youth
A new initiative in New York has announced $15 million in conditional awards over five years to help community-based service providers develop programs aimed at reducing suicide risk among youth from historically underserved populations. Managed by the Office of Mental Health through the Connecting Youth to Mental Health Supports program, the initiative focuses on racial and ethnic minorities and LGBTQ+ groups, including those in rural areas.

Woman killed, man injured when their upstate New York house explodes
A woman was killed and a man was injured when their upstate New York house exploded, authorities said.The house exploded just after 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday in the town of Lincoln in Madison County.Crews from several police and fire departments arrived at the scene and found a man and a woman trapped in debris, said Samantha Field, a spokesperson for the county.The woman was pronounced dead at the scene, and the man was airlifted to a hospital, she said. Niagara University Receives New York State Biodefense Award to Develop Novel Anti-Viral Therapy
Niagara University has been selected to receive a grant from the New York State Biodefense Commercialization Fund. The award of nearly $261,500 will be used to formulate a general anti-viral therapeutic using CholestosomeTM technology, a molecule delivery system developed at Niagara by Dr. Mary McCourt, professor of chemistry. It was one of just three academic institutions to receive awards, which included Columbia University and Mt. Sinai Medical School.
