Des Moines received hundreds of fireworks complaints. But few tickets were issued.

Just about 900 complaints about fireworks were called into Des Moines metro police stations over the Fourth of July holiday, but only 53 citations were issued.

Here's a roundup of what happened over the Fourth of July:

Iowa laws permit fireworks, but some cities have restrictions

Iowa laws only allow individuals to use or explode consumer fireworks from June 1 through July 8 and Dec. 10 through Jan. 3 of each year .

Individual cities and counties can set more restrictive rules or ban fireworks entirely.

The cities in the metro area with restrictions on fireworks are Altoona, Ames, Clive (sparklers allowed), Des Moines, Johnston, Pleasant Hill, Urbandale, West Des Moines, and Windsor Heights.

Misdemeanors and fines in cities where consumer fireworks are prohibited can range from $100 to $625 in Urbandale.

Des Moines recently reduced fines for lighting fireworks from $625 to $200 to encourage police to issue citations and more closely align fees with other metro cities.

Ankeny, Bondurant, Grimes, Indianola, Norwalk, Van Meter and Waukee had specific times and dates around the holiday when fireworks were permitted to be set off.

The Des Moines Register received data on fireworks complaints from Clive, Des Moines, Pleasant Hill and West Des Moines. Police in those cities received a total of 884 fireworks-related calls between June 30 and July 4.

Des Moines, which reported calls between July 1 and July 4, responded to 721 complaints about fireworks — about 25% of its call volume during that time period, according to data provided by the city. Last year, there were 674 that were reported, Sgt. Paul Parizek, public information officer for the Des Moines Police.

Des Moines police issued 52 fireworks ordinance violation citations since June 20.

Des Moines' first fireworks-related arrest was made on July 2.

West Des Moines received 101 complaints between June 30 and July 4. Police there issued one citation.

Clive responded to 32 fireworks calls between June 30 and July 4. Pleasant Hill responded to 30 between June 28 and July 4. Neither city issued any citations related to the calls.

    Few, minor fireworks injuries reported

UnityPoint Health — which includes Iowa Methodist Medical Center, Iowa Lutheran Hospital and Methodist West Hospital Emergency — has seen seven patients this week with fireworks-related injuries.

MercyOne said a few patients have come in with minor fireworks-related injuries.

Broadlawns Medical Center did not immediately respond to the Register's inquiry.

Des Moines Parks and Rec has already spent 100 hours cleaning up after fireworks illegally set off

Des Moines Parks and Recreation said in a social media post on Friday afternoon that staff has already spent 100 hours cleaning and fixing 19 of its 77 parks.

Last year, 27 parks saw thousands of dollars worth of fireworks damage.

"Unfortunately, we anticipate spending more time doing the same on Monday," the department said in the post. "Please celebrate responsibly."

Police also saw the "first serious" case of fireworks vandalism the weekend before the holiday in the men's restroom at Riverview Park. Someone used fireworks to destroy a new bathroom facility at the park. Police are offering a $1,000 reward for information on who set off the fireworks and caused the damage.
