Iowa's five Sullivan brothers received wide publicity when they joined the Navy during World War II and served together on the light cruiser USS Juneau. Hit by torpedoes, the ship sinks on Nov. 13, 1942, during the Battle of Guadalcanal. Three of the brothers are killed instantly, another drowns and the fifth dies several days later while awaiting rescue. It isn't until Jan. 12, 1943 ― the day of this report in the Register's sister evening paper, the Des Moines Tribune ― that the military informs the brothers' parents in Waterloo that all five are missing in action and presumed dead. From then on, the Navy would enforce a policy against brothers serving on the same ship.

Each day this month, as the Register marks its 175th birthday, we’re sharing front pages from noteworthy moments in history.
